Reaching out

This is an acrylic on canvas sized 8 "by 10" done from a reference to my photo taken at Point Lobos, California. I have used the palette knife, now a days I am just in the mood for using it more! The trees looked as if they were reaching out to each other with their branches.I could feel a lot of life there.

The inspiration for this post is Patricia Torres who has lovely blogs that are very impressive and interesting. I was amazed when she wanted to feature my work on her blog..That, I would call as reaching out.. she made the effort to ask me if she could feature my home, not worrying if she would get a no for an answer. Her positivity struck me. I think her action is beautiful. You may want to see my home pictures on her wonderful blog. coloursdekor.blogspot.com

Talking about reaching out, I feel that reaching out to others who have a need to be heard, cared and loved is always a rewarding experience. For me, reaching out to help strangers has been more satisfying because there is an element of selflessness involved. The other day, I hired an auto(a 3 wheeler, more popular than a taxi in Bangalore) to go for shopping. The driver was speeding and he was quite anxious.I casually asked if there was anything wrong and he said that he had to make 500 rupees in another hour and rush to the hospital to be with his wife who was in ICU and more the speed, the more rides he would get to make that money.I asked him to stop, gave him the money out of my purse , asked him to go straight to the hospital and left from there.I dont remember his face today, nor will I meet him again in my life but I felt really good inside that I reached out to him on that day. Sometimes, when we reach out to just connect with others, we may not get reciprocation but it is okay, at least we tried! It is better to try than to be in a bubble. At times, a smallest action is enough to reach out and make others smile. Just yesterday, I was standing in the Que to pay my bill for groceries and my cart was full. When I saw a guy standing behind me with just a bottle of coke, I asked him to skip me and pay his bill, because it would take a longer time for my billing. Seems like he was in a hurry, he was all smiles!

Painting these hugging trees has been inspirational for me today :-)

  1. Oh!! this is such a super sweet post.. I absolutely love your work.. and was ever so impressed..

I can relate to what you've written.. It sometimes takes very little effort from our end.. but means a lot to the other person.. I often try to be calm and composed on the roads... and do my best to give.. and contribute back to society.. What worth is our life.. if we cannot reach out to anyone?? Life is simple... if its something I have.. I only have it.. coz its worth sharing.. I often try and help people I know.. or dont know.. it doesnt matter... And live everyday to bring a smile on atleast one face... just one!!

Thank you for your lovely words... and thank you ... thank you... sooo soo much for sharing pics of your lovely home..

RE: Giving back... wish more people in this world were as compassionate and genuine as you. You are a light in a world that's dim all too often.

  10. Padmaja, what a lovely home you have!

Thanks for sharing your heartwarming story with us...I'm often struck with the kindness in strangers and it was such a sweet example! I too try to be kind in my day...now that I'm living in a land far from my own, I always try to think of myself as an ambassador to my county and culture...it makes my day when I get a big, from-the-heart smile from a stranger. I never used to smile a lot as a young girl...I was very serious and had all the weight of the world on my shoulders!!! But noww, as I grow older, I realise how much joy just a simple smile can spread...and what could be a better way to change the world than through these simple acts of kindness?...
    Lovely post!

  11. Love this post about "reaching out" to others. That taxi driver will pass that kindness on someday and so will the man with the coke. I truly believe that. There are numerous things we can do to make another's day a little brighter and it doesn't mean it has to involve money. I like it that you tied your thoughts into the trees reaching out to one another and it made me think of the collective shade they give to creatures and wildlife below. Thank-you for your beautiful vision in art and in writing.

  28. What a kind heart you are! Letting the person with only an item or two go in front of you at the grocery is (to me) a common courtesy, but to help out the taxi driver was truly heartwarming. You must have great karma!
