Ganesha

Ganesha is one of the most loved and worshiped deity by Hindus in India and around the world. His cute elephant head makes him easily recognizable! He is always with his "vehicle" a mouse. He is widely revered as the Remover of Obstacles. No Hindu home is without a Ganesha and I have collected about 70 different styled Ganeshas from India and South East Asia, many of them have inspired me to paint.

This is a commission and the buyer wanted Him in a modern contemporary style with minimum details and not so bright colors. I enjoy doing commissions but in a corner of my mind, I have the ambiguity of making the buyer happy. It is challenging to envision some image that someone has in their minds and bring life to that image. Here, I improvised on a reference image given to me. Rajni Dutta, who bought this painting loved Him immensely as He is and was very happy to take Him home :-)

  1. I have a Ganesha my sister gave me! I touch him every night and I do see him as happy, Padmaja. He will always sit on my nightstand. I like it that he represents removing obstacles. I like the golden and burnt orange colors you chose for him against that beautiful textured blue background.

  5. I recognize Genesha. I'll keep this image on my computer because I think it is lovely, and because I have some obstacles. The color and style is unusual but very appealing.

  7. Such a beautiful painting Padmaja. I loved the story too! Commissions can be challenging for sure as you are often asked to do something that may not ring true with you. I had never heard of Ganesha before. I am much the wiser tonight. Thank you for sharing and for coming by my blog to visit. Always nice to see you there. Blessings to you.

  9. I like it, padmaja. A lot of the images I have seen of Ganesha were too intricate and decorative, so that your quieter design has more appeal and looks kinder.

Your other question: I always believe in making the customer happy, but when it comes to outright requests for changes, I withdraw the work and keep it for myself.

  13. Your Ganesha is wonderful!! I especially love his eyes, they are captivating. Yes, commission work is always tough. It's as though someone else is painting through you and your right, there is no way to know what they envision...but you did a wonderful painting and I'm happy for you that your client loved him!

  23. Wow! You captured Ganesha so very well in this lovely painting! I know what you mean about commissions. :) Although I love getting a commission, there is that part of me that has to be extra intuitive in order to capture what the buyer is 'seeing' in their minds eye. Looks like you did an excellent job with this painting! Congratulations. :)
