Serendipity

Acrylic on a 16 by 20 inch canvas.

I was experimenting for arriving at a texture with plastic wrap. I did not have any specific subject in mind, the intention was to let my mind wander alongside the process of playing with paints and a plastic wrap. Then I saw these shapes .. a fine tuning with some smoothing and sharpening out the edges here and there and the mother and her baby popped out! Now I call that a happy accident! or may be was it intuitive?!

"I remember my mother's prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life. ~Abraham Lincoln"

And I think it holds good in everyone's life!

  1. There are some lovely textures produced by this method, and what you have created out of the emerging shapes is so lovely! The quote says it all, mothers and their prayers nuture and protect us.

  3. "Playing with paints" are the words I like most. As soon as we lose control (or part of it) we get the really great results, I know now. And not only in painting)).
Serendipity. I could never learn this word, every time I met it dictionary was needed. So strange, as intuition is always here in my life.
As for the gallery question, thank you so much for your reply. I feel the same. They are looking for the naive souls..
And your painting in deep earth colors is so strong.

  5. It's a great experience to have a painting lead you in the direction it wishes to go! This turned out wonderfully.

Really love the Lincoln quote, Padmaja!

  7. Lovely textures! I guess you just showed that its true some paintings do paint themselves but they have to be really coaxed into existence stroke by stroke by the artist :) I love the quote about mothers and prayer!

  10. It's a really beautiful painting. The mothers strong profile almost seems influenced by the older Egyptian art.

  22. I think you did a great job with the saran wrap texture and it is so intriguing to see that you allowed the shapes to come forward. What I really like about what you found is the golden glow around the Mother's face. I also really like your reds you achieved in the background. Awesome, Padmaja!
