Being Together

Acrylic on masonite 8 by 10 inches

The inspiration to do this painting was from my  thoughts about an old couple's journey together for 60 plus long years.Theirs was an arranged marriage, very common in India, two random different people coming together to spend the rest of their lives with each other.I have seen their differences, their adaptations, their compromises in adversities, the embracing of each others' families and so much more. I feel there is a lot to learn from this kind of togetherness..

“A great marriage is not when the 'perfect couple' comes together. It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.”
Dave Meurer

The new year  for me started in a positive way with getting to spend quality time with family visiting us after 2 long years and two of my paintings getting sold at the Art 100×100” exhibition at Bait Al Zubair Museum, that showcased 100 pieces of art by Muscat-based artists for sale at 100 rials each ($250) with the intention to raise funds for the Oman Cancer Association. This compassionate and creative effort was initiated by Ibrahim Gailani. I am glad that I could be part of it.

  1. That is a nice quote. To see the perfections in an imperfect man is the key to a joyful married life. The painting of the couple with a single umbrella speaks high of togetherness.
I am so happy that you too contributed to a good cause through your paintings.

  3. Congratulations on the sale, and I LOVE what you said about marriage. The acceptance and the compromise and the appreciation of the other as they are... Such wisdom in that. The painting is so beautiful.

  4. Your painting is beautiful. What I liked more is the description you have given about it... I loved every word you said about two people being together..
Enjoy making art and yes congratulations for the grand start of the year with a sale... A sale always encourages an artist more for the appreciation for the art work than the monitory value of the art piece.

  8. I really like this painting. Makes me think of my own Mother and Father and my Grandparents, too. I especially like the blue colors around it with a dash of white hitting the umbrella. It makes me sense truth and a bit of that devine light coming through.
Congratulations on the sales of your paintings, Padmaja.

  10. There was a time when arranged marriage were laughed off, and looked down upon by people with so called modern thoughts. They strongly believed that they must know the person they were going to spend their lifetime, that the marriage can be a success only if two people were in love before the marriage.
Well arranged marriages have remained strong, and even youngsters are realizing its durability, and are accepting it with a little modification.
One can see its influence , by the birth of so many matrimonial sites, offering endless choices, making it possible for people to interact and know their options and tie the knot.
Your painting has aptly brought out the beauty of arranged marriages. Our parents, our grandparents and many of us too are living proof that it can work beautifully.
It is so good to know that the New year started off so well for you, with sale of 2 painting for a good cause.
Glad to hear you could spend some fun time with your family too.
    All the best Padmaja!

  15. I see such strong individuality in your works which I missed during the month and observe now all together.
And very strong painting this one. Going into the blue.
The tradition of arranged marriage sounds so wise and so difficult to me.

  17. What a beautiful painting of the married couple. I like that they are looking (to me) towards the future. It's unknown because of the rain. I also like that the man's coat is a similar to the background.

  22. From England originally, I cannot help but think of my own parents always sharing an umbrella. A love match not arranged, but still full of the ups and downs of life and love survived based on respect.
Congratulations on your sale and how generous of you to participate.
