Cherry Blossoms

This is my sister and her son sitting under the cherry blossoms tree. She is a great photographer and many of her pictures have been inspirations for me to paint. I like this particular picture a lot and decided to do it in oil on canvas sized 5" by 7".

I had been to Washington D.C. during spring and had the good fortune to see cherry blossoms in bloom. The city of Tokyo gave the original 3,000 cherry trees as a gift to the city of Washington D. C. in 1912 as a symbol of friendship between the United States and Japan. The cherry blossom is a very delicate flower that blooms for a very short time. For the Japanese this represents the transience of life and for the Chinese the cherry blossom is a very significant symbol of love. When I looked at this picture I could see a special connection, a similarity as well as a difference. The mother child relationship is as special as cherry blossoms. But is it as transient as the flower? The following quote probably answers that!

"Grown don't mean nothing to a mother. A child is a child. They get bigger, older, but grown? What's that suppose to mean? In my heart it don't mean a thing." ~Toni Morrison, Beloved
