The Transition

This is an abstracted inspiration from a picture taken at the Centennial lake at Columbia, Maryland. Oil on paper sized 9 by 12 inches. I replaced my brushes with my fingers :-)

Autumn or usually called Fall brings to my mind, vivid hues and joyful exuberance. And the name fall is believed to have originated not because of the fall of leaves from the trees, but because it is the season when the sun falls below the equator to spring back up again six months later.Last year at this time I was in Maryland, USA and had the chance to witness a spectrum of colors between the green shades of summer and the dull browns of winter..... Crimson, fiery red, dull orange, pure orange, soft yellows and bright yellows.

The transition in colors during this season is just amazing!.. well I think this transition in nature is very much similar to transitions in our lives.. an inevitable factor...life transitions are mostly challenging and make us learn lessons and grow.. well, let me stop getting philosophical and just enjoy Autumn as it is :-)

  1. At first, I thought your post was going to be another 'appreciate the glorious colors of autumn' post, similar to what everyone else has been writing. But you talked about life transitions, and it suddenly brought up a swell of emotion in me. We are going through some major life transitions in my family right now... and I'm struggling to find the beauty in them. I know it's there, but I have to clear some old perceptions away to see it all clearly. Thanks for the insightful, poignant words. And the lovely picture!

  2. I was sure "Fall" was caused by leaves. Now I know. I am in the beginning of fall myself, hard time for me. And you help to see the good in the transitions).
As for the painting I feel you were very passionate when drawing (or fingering?)... Great result.
I promised myself that when I learn the drawing and painting I will forget it and start doing abstracts.

  3. Finger painting! -very beautiful piece and a thoughtful write up -- I always keep reminding myself that 'change is the only constant' ; helps with life in general ;)

a technical question-what kind of paper do you use with oil?

  4. Although it is an abstract painting, the trees seem very real and present. Transitions in our lives would be easier if they always came with beautiful colors.

  5. Oh heavens! I don't know which I like more, Padmaja, the banyan tree or this! You make me want to get my oil paints out and explore, which I may do in January on my break. The fact that you abandoned brushes and went to using your fingers furthur pulls at me. Lovely. Absolutely lovely fall painting!

  16. Hello Padmaja, What strikes me of your work is the sensitivity and handling of the pigments and color and equal sensitivity of the words you use.
Much is told of the artist, I thank you for being.
