An oil on canvas sized 20 by 22 inches, this is a redo of one of my older paintings.
Sedona is located in northern Arizona, the essence of which are the red rocks that glow with brilliant orange and red color with sun rise and sun set. Over millions of years, layers of sandstone and limestone were left in the area by a receding ocean. Iron oxide eventually covered the grains of sandstone and in a natural process, rust formed. The stunningly beautiful red rocks of Sedona are the result of this process. The red orange color of these rocks are stimulating and soul nourishing!
The visit to Sedona has been one of the best times spent in my life. The metamorphosis that these sandstones went through to become what they are today did make me think of the changes that we as humans go through in life and if we are as open as these sandstones, these changes that happen to us can lead to dramatic and lasting transformation in our way of life.
The rocks offered a challenge to paint with layers and layers of colors applied to bring out the glow and depth. Painting this was meditative and helped me to be in a zero thoughts zone!
