Morning Spirit

The first painting was done for the June project of Unusual angles by Marion Boddy-Evans, the About.com painting guide.

I love my morning coffee with a lot of foam and before taking the first sip I enjoy the light that falls on each tiny bubble. I did a top view of the Steel cup that I was holding
. Painted news paper bits to the back ground to add extra interest.
Critiques at home wanted me to redo it on canvas, as a pair to my kitchen painting "Parade" So I did the second version using the same colors that I used in" Parade".This time, I held a mug with a handle and also put more milk in to my coffee:-)

  1. Only an artist would consciously notice the light shining on the bubbles of her oatmeal! This is wonderful artwork! You are stretching yourself artistically in new ways! Good job!

  2. Very interesting, Padmaja, at first glance I thought they were collages. The only thing out of the ordinary I ever tried to do was a painting of pairs of ears like they were butterflys. I painted my lady gathering seaweed over it. I guess if someone buys that one they get a "two fer"; two for the price of one.
I like these paintings of yours very much.

  3. The coffee really draws me into the paintings. It is beautifully rendered, and reminds me of spending the first hours of the morning looking into my coffee. I noticed the hands after, making a very interesting design.

  4. And both paintings are beautiful... how could they not be with such a wonderful subject as coffee? Great colors... love the viewpoint.

Oh, and I think the bubbles in coffee are pretty too :-)

  5. I like both versions, Padmaja! What great pieces that would well decorate a little coffee shop wall...Or a kitchen in the home of a coffee lover!

  7. I like very much this unusual angle of the drawing. And the colors. And the collage effect. And the detailed work over the bubbles.

  9. Padmaja, thank you for the very nice comment on my Billie Holiday portrait. Feedback is always a nice thing to recieve.

I love these paintings! The bubbles really pop out at you. You're very brave for taking the forearms into the corners of the painting; many would think that it would lead the viewers eyes out of the painting. You've really made it work. Blessings!
